Nurses – Continuing Professional Development & Stressful Holidays for Nurses

Learning, #growth and #development do not end upon graduation from #nursing school. Continuing education plays a crucial role for nurses. #Nurses should plan to take at least one CE activity a month. Regularly taking #CE courses not only keeps your career knowledge up to date, it puts you on the path to lifelong learning, a critical component of being a #nurse.

Remember that ‘#Practice means any role, whether remunerated or not, in which the individual uses their skills and knowledge as a health practitioner in their profession. Practice in this context is not restricted to the provision of direct clinical care. It also includes using professional knowledge (working) in a direct nonclinical relationship with clients, working in management, administration, education, research, advisory, regulatory or policy development roles, and any other roles that impact on the safe, effective delivery of services in the profession.’ So that means that you can attain your #CPD hours via formal and informal activities. The type of learning activities selected can be broad and varied.

You need to have documentation of the identified learning need, a learning plan, your participation in the learning activity, and the outcome achieved will form the evidence of CPD you may need to provide. References to the articles that you have read are needed for self-directed activities.

#Healthcare providers aren’t the only ones separated from family during #holidays. Inpatient stays don’t magically end on the day before a special celebration, and thousands of #patients end up stuck in the hospital. Moreover, some patients may not have any family to speak of, thus they may see you as their substitute family. Giving a little extra and spreading holiday cheer to your patients is your sacred duty and privilege. In the end, cultivating compassion regarding our own feelings and the feelings of others is the key during the holidays. We need to remember that one person’s holiday may be another’s nightmare, and we cannot easily know how this time of year may manifest emotionally for any individual.

#Kindness, #self-compassion, a little extra #patience, and a giving heart go a long way when the holidays come around. Remain aware of what others may be experiencing, ask kind questions, and listen with an open heart and mind; that is the true holiday spirit in action. While you may be dealing with your own longings while working on #Christmas, your patients are in a similar situation with the added insult of feeling unwell and being unable to go home at the end of the shift. Although you may miss your family, you can eventually walk out the door. Cultivating #empathy for your patients’ plight is an important act of compassion.

Nursing Practice: Emotional Intelligence, Compassion Fatigue, Psychological Support

#Nurses experience a wide range of #emotions when caring for #patients. Empathy is powerful because it builds connection. People feel heard, supported, cared for and validated when someone is taking the time to truly walk through the steps of empathy with them. Nurses are there for some of the most challenging days in an individual’s life, and have a unique ability to provide this powerful support frequently.

Patients are discharged as quickly as possible, whether from acute care or rehab, and nurses are ultimately responsible for the seamless transition of patients to home. As a specialty, #homecare has established best practices to help in this process.

The National Comprehensive #Cancer Network notes that nearly all patients experience some level of distress at diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond into survivor ship. And up to 47% of those diagnosed with a new or recurrent cancer show a significant level of distress. Unfortunately, less than half are identified and referred for #psychological support. These psychological needs must often be addressed before meeting the patient’s informational needs. #Healthcare professionals play a vital role in assessing and screening for psychological distress. 

Emotional intelligence is a new concept in nursing; initial research studies indicate that #emotional #intelligence is an important part of successful nursing practice. Although research on emotional intelligence is at the developmental stage, regardless of the theoretical framework used, there is agreement that emotional intelligence includes the concepts of emotional awareness in relation to self and others, professional efficiency and emotional management.

#Compassion fatigue occurs when a caregiver experiences what experts call “secondary traumatic stress” in reaction to caring for those who are themselves suffering from traumatic events. Although caregivers don’t actually experience the event as is the case with post-traumatic stress disorder, they experience the event emotionally by caring for the patient. CF has become more widely recognized as a problem that many nurses face.

Progress in placing nurses on boards

Information regarding nursing’s value on boards and how by #education, background and experience they can contribute to them has been promulgated at programs and in seminars and has been filling the nursing literature since the Nurses on Boards Coalition was formed. The coalition reported a total of nearly 5,000 nurses on boards earlier this year, a number which has continued to grow in the months since.

There also has been a good deal of involvement from many professional nursing organizations, and with a goal of 10,000 nurses on boards by 2020 and the current number showing approximately half of that, we’re doing pretty good.

Why to choose Nursing Profession!

#Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. It includes the promotion of #health, the prevention of #illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people.

There are more than 100 different specializations in Nursing, many of which can be sorted into these five main categories:

·         #Staff #Nurses provide patient care in hospitals.

·         #Advanced #Practice #Nurses often work as #primary #care providers or gain advanced training in their area of specialization.

·         #Nurse #Managers are leaders and administrators who manage other nurses.

·         #Nursing #Researchers conduct research to improve health outcomes and shape policy.

Many nurses work long hours on their feet, and some spend a lot of time with very sick patients. Specializations like #trauma nursing deal with emergency situations, and work environments like labour and delivery units can be an emotional roller coaster.

Despite the drawbacks, though, nurses tend to report an incredibly high level of career satisfaction. In fact, a 2017 survey of #registered #nurses found that a whopping 83 percent are satisfied with their career choice.

The Department of Labour projects that the number of #RNs will grow from 2.71 million in 2012 to 3.24 million in 2022, an increase of 19%.

#Nurses promote health, prevent disease and help patients cope with illness. They have a unique scope of practice and can practice independently, although they also collaborate with all members of the #healthcare team to provide the individualized care needed by each patient.
